Product Description
WOW! Here is something you don’t see often! In fact, this is the first one I have ever had the pleasure of offering. The famous bronze Gibbs medal made for each crew member who took part in that important record-breaking maiden voyage. This particular medal was given to John A. Lock, no less an important person than her Chief Purser. As you can imagine these are highly sought after, especially given how much attention the Big Ship has been getting lately. They also are not often sold out of the family that originally owned them for obvious reasons. Made, I gather, at Gibbs’s own expense, it really showcases how much he thought of the USL flagship and how important her record-breaking maiden voyage was. Of course, the ss United States was the highlight of Gibbs’s glittering career, designing all manner of ships. Not bad for a self-taught fellow! Around the edge, the medal lists both voyages with all the pertinent details from each direction. Made by the Medallic Art Company of New York. Comes with a box, but the box is not original. In excellent condition. AC
