Launched by Mary, Lady Inverclyde, in June, 1906, Lusitania set new standards for speed, size, and luxury on the Atlantic. But then you knew all that! Cunard and John Brown went all out for Lusitania’s launch. They produced a beautiful launch invitation and put on quite a special luncheon, splitting the cost of the luncheon. Norman Wilkinson even did a painting of Lusitania sliding down the ways to give to Lady Inverclyde. Inside the invitation is the original insert, which shows a painting of the ship by Arthur Burgess as she would appear when complete. Measures about 9½” x 7½”. Needless to say this is a highly sought-after invitation to the launch of Cunard’s innovative record breaker.
