Product Description
Ultra rare tourist-third-class deck plan for the White Star Liner RMS Olympic, dated June, 1931. In very good condition and measures about 23″ x 34.5″.
Did you know many Edwardian liners became four-class ships late in their careers? White Star Line were pioneers in the late 1920s, coming up with novel ideas to try to sell former immigrant cabins which would they could not move in the wake of severely limited US immigrant quotas. By piecing together some of the lower second-class accommodations, splitting off part of the second-class dining room, and sprucing up the old third-class smoking and general rooms….tourist-third class was born on Olympic. This bit of advertising gimmickry combined with real-world improvements began to work, and in the late 1920s, budget-conscious tourists began to purchase these hard-to-sell cabins–although some of them might have questioned the angles chosen by the company’s publicity photographer because the cabins were still so small that you had to go outside to change your mind!
