Copper-plate handwriting in cursive using a fountain pen seems so pleasantly antithetical to our modern world. It might not be the finest example of great calligraphy, but it is a gosh darn site better than my own handwriting! Exceptionally interesting letter home to “mother” talking about the ship and her speed and her being “a little shaky…on account of the vibration of the vessel!” He described the voyage, the people he met (and wants to meet like the Duchess of Marlborough–formerly Consuelo Vanderbilt), the state of the sea, the gusty wind on Boat Deck, etc., etc. Don’t we wish we had letters like this for other great liners! It is a show stopper. Dated only with the days, no year. Very clearly pre World War One. MO
