Ah, 1897 what a year. It was the year of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, but at the same time, German competition on the Atlantic became a major threat. The threat to England’s dominance of the seas first came in the form of this ship, the magnificent Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse. It is almost quaint to say that her 14,000 tons made her the largest ship in the world, but it did. Just think how fast ships developed in the next 15 years!
