Product Description

A phone by GEC and made for the most luxurious ship Cunard ever operated, the RMS Caronia.

“You can telephone to any part of the world whilst at sea.”  Can you imagine being in the middle of the North Atlantic and sitting in your cabin on an ocean liner talking to people back home?  It must have seemed like the  height of modern technology in the 1940s.  While you might have been able to call any part of the world, it didn’t come cheap!

This phone came from a gentleman whose father took him to the sale of Caronia fittings when he was just 12 years old, and this is what he wanted!  Made of cream-colored, heavy-duty bakelite, the phone has a pyramid shape and quite a bit of heft to keep it from tipping over in rough seas.  An identical phone can be seen in the archival photo of the bedroom of a suite on board Caronia.  These can be made to work in your home but can only receive calls.  They have a unique ring as several of my customers have set them up so I have seen them in use.

In excellent condition, the cord is a touch dirty but is completely intact and has some green paint on it.  How appropriate is that?  See photos for condition.  One of the nicest items you can get from this legendary liner.
