Product Description
Another one of those rare items that Luxury Liner Row is known for! A superb serving platter for the British & North American Royal Mail Steam Packets (later known as Cunard Line). Agreed among steamship historians to be the first pattern used aboard the first Cunard ships (Britannia, Caledonia, Acadia, and Columbia) in 1840, this outstanding platter was made by Alcock & Co. This extremely rare pattern does not come up for sale very often in this condition, which is perfect–no chips, cracks, or crazing. Amazing for being nearly 200 years old! Measures about 15″ x 11.75″ x 2.25″.
This platter is a king-maker piece for any Cunard collection. Imagine Charles Dickens or Sir Samuel Cunard himself could have eaten off this very platter. These ships were so small it makes me think of Dickens’s letter back home “Not seasick but going to be….”
