Caronia, Art Deco Console

I am proud to offer an extremely rare item and one of the nicest pieces of Cunard furniture I have ever seen.  This is one of a pair of stunning Art Deco consoles in precious macassar ebony veneer from the second-class lounge.  The console is just about the size of a Cunard tea try, and I suspect one of their duties was as waiters’ stands during afternoon tea.  Don’t you think it is simply stunning?  I do, and that’s no coincidence because I consider Caronia’s second-class lounge to be one of the best Art Deco spaces ever put on any ocean liner.  Certainly it was highly luxurious because of Cunard’s policy to make second class on Caronia equal to first class due to the fact the ship would be all first class on her cruises.  The legs are of astounding quality and done in German Silver.

This comes to us directly from the auction of Caronia’s fittings in 1974.  The previous owner purchased many one-of-a-kind items from Caronia and installed them in her 5th Ave. apartment.  The items she purchased from the ship were so impressive that her apartment made the cover of Architectural Digest.  I have purchased everything from Caronia that was in her apartment, and more items from this collection will be going up later this year.  I have had the console completely restored, and it simply glows.  It sports its original Formica top and has no issues or missing parts.  All you would need to do it put it up and enjoy it.  I have both of the consoles from the lounge, and I am keeping the other; so this will be the only one ever available.    I have included a photo of my console so you can see the effect once it is mounted.  It measures about 27” across x 17” deep x 26” tall.  Note the general arrangement plans for the console marked “DW” for dumb waiter for their location in the ship.
