Mauretania (1907) Book Ends

Good ol’ RMS Mauretania.  One of the most famous Cunarders and, for that matter, one of the most famous ocean greyhounds ever to sail the North Atlantic.  She was beloved and a large amount of items were made from her woodwork after her sale to the scrapyard in 1935.  Pieces produced from her timbers ranged from small napkin rings to large items such as garden furniture.  Given that items like that were used outside, they don’t survive by and large.  Smaller items are also coveted, but one tends to find small barrels or ashtrays.  These bookends are a sort of a happy middle ground.  They are striking and useful but also not too big to be difficult to ship or display.  Made from her teak decking and sporting its original maker’s tag, they are in nice condition.  They measure about 5.5′ x 4″.  Not too often seen so grab and enjoy them, perhaps use them to display a few more of your serious ocean-liner books.  Perhaps “Home From The Sea,” the bio of her most famous captain, Arthur Rostron of Titanic-rescue fame.
