Product Description

One of the most iconic chairs ever made for a liner.  A first-class dining room chair from the French Line’s masterpiece, the ss Ile de France.  Pre-war French luxury and useful too!  The Ile de France set new standards for the interior design of transatlantic liners.  With interiors created by some of the greatest names in French design, CGT ships after the first World War changed everything.  No longer would they be the period revival that looked longingly backwards to times past, which was so popular before the first World War.  They looked forward to the future — a streamlined future to be sure.

This exquisite chair was designed by Pierre Patout and foreshadowed the chairs in the dining room of the Normandie eight years later.  For some reason, after the second World War, CGT replaced all the high art deco first-class dining room chairs of the Ile de France with new chairs of a slightly different design.  I have never heard of a good reason for this, but all the replacement chairs eventually went to Japan with her and were sold off at the scrap yard.

Originally covered in tapestry, this superb piece of French design is in great condition and all joints are solid.  Gorgeous and, dare I say, rare!  Be the envy of your ocean-liner friends.  Stands about 36” tall and 22.5” wide.  I have seen these sell at auction for far more than I am asking so a bargain at this price!  If any additional photos are required, please just ask.  See archival photo for one in use on board.  JF
