Acanthus-leaf-pattern wine stopper. This beautiful and classic silver pattern was introduced with the RMS Aquitania in 1914. Made by Elkington Plate and marked Cunard White Star, the stopper likely dates to the late 1930s and would have been used on one of the top 5 most popular ships of all time. Then as now, the sommelier would re-cork your bottle should you not finish it and save the rest that you paid for so you could enjoy it the next night. Since passengers rarely handled these stoppers, they are quite hard to come by. In excellent condition.
“A gourmet can tell from the flavor whether a woodcock’s leg is the one on which the bird is accustomed to roost” Lucius Beebe.
