Product Description
Superb image of Holland America’s Spaardam, which interestingly was built by Harland & Wolf in 1881 as White Star’s first steel-hulled vessel, Arabic. HAL bought her in 1890 and sailed her for 11 years as Spaarndam. Spaarndam is the name of the small village which is famous for the story where a Dutch boy, “The Hero of Haarlem,” sticks his finger in a dike to prevent the town from flooding. The back of the photo shows where it was attached to an album page. The image is in excellent condition.
