During my recent travels, I found a book that is one of those items that makes you say “wow”! It is a testimonial book about a silver service presented to Thomas Ismay (who founded White Star) as a thank you from the shareholders of White Star for his outstanding handling of the business (and quite frankly for making the shareholders so much money!). There are few copies of this still around, but what makes this one even more special is that it was presented to Dr. O’Loughlin (White Star’s senior Surgeon who was lost on Titanic). O’Loughlin was a very old and dear friend of Thomas Ismay and Bruce Ismay and had worked for White Star for many decades. In fact, Bruce Ismay and O’Loughlin dinned together that last night on Titanic. I have always wondered what they spoke about, having worked together for so long.
The book is in good condition, and the silver service is currently on display at the Merseyside Maritime Museum in Liverpool. Needless to say, a fine addition to any Titanic collection.
