I, for one, love salvaged items. I lament the huge and growing government intrusion into our freedoms, particularly in restricting sport diving by vastly expanding the number of wrecks that are now off limits. Huge numbers of wrecks would not have been located, had their identities discovered, or even been visited at all were it not for the large group of dedicated sport divers. Speaking with them allows me to live vicariously though them their tough and demanding hobby.
This third-class dinner plate was recovered from the ss Arabic, sunk in 1914. It is made by Wedgwood and is date stamped 1914; so it sank new! Like the third-class china from Titanic, the White Star burgee survives well since it is underneath the glaze. In excellent condition given what it has been through with some pitting to the rim and rust stains on the back. Items from Arabic are quite tough to come by now as they are all snapped up into private collections. Measures 9¼” in diameter.
