American Export

30672     Constitution                             Billfold

Souvenir billfold from the Constitution.  Sorry, folks, but there's no money in it!  It comes from a time when even inexpensive souvenirs were still made from real English Morocco leather.  A slight touch of wear on the front but otherwise excellent.  Measures about 4" x 3".  $25.

30731     Constitution                             Floaty Pen

Cute souvenir pen for the s.s. Constitution during her white phase.  Dates to the 1960's.  Happily still has its oil so she still floats (unlike the real one!).  In excellent condition.  $22.

30278     Constitution                             Photograph

What a rare commodity!  American-built tonnage.  Beautiful design.  Sleek profile.  And quality steel.  None of that hull pounding you get in today's modern cruise ships when the wind picks up.  All of this is embodied in the late, great Constitution.  American Export press release on the back, mentioning that it's the "nation's newest transatlantic glamour liner."  This shot of her was taken while she was still at her builders yard.  Measures about 10" x 8".  In mint condition.  $40.

SOLD!

30842     Constitution                             Pin Tray

Unusual pin dish in her later white-hull phase.  From her on-board gift shop.  Measures about 2" x 2".  In mint condition.  $25.

30133  Independence                          Bottle Stopper

Use this stopper at your next dinner party!  Missing its cork, but it could easily be replaced.  Excellent condition.  No damage to the enamel.  $20.

30558     Independence                          Key Ring

Lovely enameled American Export key chain on a long fob.  The entire thing measures 6".  No scratches, cracks, or dings.  In other words, mint.  $30.

14637     Independence                          Pen, souvenir

Nice souvenir "floaty" pen from one of America's most long-lived liners.  The best thing is that it has not lost its oil!  In excellent condition.  $22.

30395     Independence                        Post card

Always a beauty, here's an at-sea view of the Independence.  Listed on the back as "the beautiful sun liners."  Written on and postmarked but missing stamps.  Message about how the ship is "rocky today."  Good condition.  Bump to corners and in generally "mailed" condition.  $5.

30882  American Export                      Ashtray

Mid-century style ashtray.  Made of china and tapers front to back to give prominence to the name.  The absence of "Isbrandtsen" from the name indicates that it dates to before 1964.  "Made in U.S.A." on bottom.  Super condition.  The diameter is about 4" across.  $28.

30439  American Export                      Ashtray

Could you ask for a better logo?  Happily, this one has the less-common and short-lived American Export-Isbrandtsen Line name that is harder to find than one for American Export.  Measures over 3" x 3".  Perfect condition.  A quantity available.  $18.

SOLD!

30596  American Export                      Cup and Saucer

Kudos to the American Export person who, over half a century ago, decided on such a classy design for their china.  This beautiful gold and maroon cup and saucer is particularly handsome.  Made in Italy by "S.A.I.M.I." in Genoa.

As the fortunes of America's merchant marine waned, in 1964 American Export and the Isbrandtsen Line merged.  Unfortunately, it was to no avail, and eventually rising costs pushed American passenger ships off the sea.  Shades of modern American businesses.  This cup and saucer dates from the time of the merger and sports the logo of the merged companies.  Absolutely mint.  $75.

30259  American Export                      Pin Tray

The only item I have ever seen with the combined company's new house flag proudly displayed.  Mint condition.  A pair available.  Measure just over 2" x 2".  $25.

26888  American Export                      Plate

Measures about 7" in diameter.  I have heard that these were on the tables when the diner sat down.  Independence/Constitution era.  Two small losses of gold along the rim (can be seen in photo) otherwise excellent.  $40.

32024   American Line        Booklet

111-year-old booklet produced by the very proud International Navigation Company after their ship's excellent service in the Spanish-American War.  64 pages and filled with interesting never-before-seen illustrations, this booklet chronicles all four ships -- the Saints, the Paris, and New York.

Binding is weak with some missing paper from the spine.  The contents, however, is excellent.  Overall very good condition considering its age.  $95.

20139   American Line        Booklet

Ninety-page book covering the American Line's (and Red Star's) New York -Southampton service.  Dates to 1987, this book chronicles the building and outfitting of the St. Paul and St. Louis.  Thirty fantastic photos among which are the launch of the St. Louis and her boilers waiting to be lifted on board as well as extensive interior images of first, second, and third class.  Also covered are photos of the interior and exterior of the Paris and New York and abstracts of logs for all four ships, citing their record passages.

Includes all the typical American Line passenger information and includes a fleet list.  As an added bonus, there are excellent fold-out maps of Manhattan, the Southampton docks in 1897, and the Atlantic Ocean.

A lovely full-color "funnels and flags" page, showing you how to tell all the major Atlantic steamship companies at a glance.

Unfortunately, the cover is missing, but so rare it probably doesn't matter.  If it had  its cover, this brochure would be the highlight of any American Line collection, but as it is, it's still a stunner, filled with images I've never seen before.  As is.  $95.

20005  American Line / Red Star                 Brochure

"Facts for Travelers."  1894.  Lengthy 38-page booklet of information and facts focusing on the New York and Paris.  Much detail of what a passenger could expect on board.  Five photos and numerous illustrations.  Also included is a description of the International Navigation Co's take over of the Paris and New York with little-known facts like President Harrison raised the flag on the New York on Washington's birthday.

An interesting collection of odd facts covering things like the population of the principal cities of Europe, the depths of the world's oceans, the birthdates and accession dates for the leaders of Europe, etc.  A cable "codex" of the Red Star Line, single-word codes designed to incorporate a whole sentence of information.

Slight tear to front cover at spine. Was once folded and a nick off of top corner of the cover.  $35.

20032  American Line                 Brochure

Extremely well-illustrated booklet produced for non-immigrant third-class passengers by the American Line.  This booklet chronicles the actual experience of a third-class passenger who made a round trip on the New York and St. Louis.

Among the unusual photos are shots of the pier, boarding the ship, a third-class cabin, a third-class pantry, the third-class kitchen, the mail room, one of the engines, customs, Ellis Island, etc.

Circa 1895.  32 pages.  Some scuffing to covers with separation at spine. Otherwise very good condition.  $65.

20076   American Line          Brochure

Circa 1901 brochure for the St. Louis, St. Paul, New York, and Philadelphia.  Covers first, second, and third class.  Nine photos on 10 pages.  "Kosher meats supplied and cooked for Jewish passengers."  The earliest mention of Kosher facilities I have ever seen.  $45.

20155  American Line       Brochure

Fantastic brochure from the turn of the last century showing life on board the St. Louis, St. Paul, New York, and Philadelphia.  Extensive photos of the ships' interiors, including the dining room, smoking room, staircase, etc., with fashionable men and women painted in.

24 pages with 23 photos.  Post 1901.  Excellent condition with some slight paper loss to the cover.  $70.

20234  American Line       Brochure

Unusual brochure for the Mongolia and the Manchuria, who were on a short-lived charter to the American Line that lasted less than three years.  These ships resumed steamship service to Germany that had been interrupted for more than five years because of World War I.  Where else are you going to get to see interior photos of the Mongolia and the Manchuria?

12 pages with 19 photos, including interiors and exteriors of the two ships.  Dated 1921.  $40.

20112  American Line        Brochure

Fold-out brochure from about 1905.  Ships mentioned are the Haverford, Merion, and Friesland.

It's interesting that unlike Cunard and White Star, the American Line did not include information in their passenger lists such as the bill of fare, baggage handling, rental of deck chairs, etc. It was contained in a separate brochure like this one.  Superb graphics on cover.

32 pages with numerous illustrations.  Excellent condition.  $35.

20250   American Line        Brochure

Entry into service brochure for the Haverford and Pittsburgh.  Eight pages with seven photos, showcasing the interiors of the Haverford.

Circa 1901.  Excellent condition.  $30.

32321   American Line        Cigarette Tin

Great cigarette tin advertising their Liverpool to Philadelphia service.  Dates to after the purchase of White Star in 1902.  Has a striker on the bottom.  In good condition with a fair amount of rust around the edges.  Any souvenirs for this line are quite difficult to find.  Only the second I've ever seen.  Measures about 4¼" x 3".  $95.

32997   American Line        Crystal

Very scarce wine glass for the American Line.  Fantastic rope logo with the company name.  Dates to the 1890's and stands about 5" tall.  In excellent condition.  An extremely rare opportunity.  $195.

32481   American Line        Crystal

Fantastic crystal champagne saucer for the American Line.  Wonderful rope logo with the company.  Beautifully faceted, dating to the 1890's and standing about 4½" tall.  In excellent condition.  Has a beautiful ring!  These types of glasses are out of favor now as most champagne is served in flutes.  Grab it because you probably won't see another!  $195.

20222  American Line         Passage Rates, 1900

Rates for the St. Louis and St. Paul dating to September 1900.  A suite for three adults in the summer season was $800.  Very good condition.  $15.

20105   American Line          Sailing Schedule

Fold-over list of proposed sailings for International Navigation Company dating to 1901.  A bit frayed around the edges, else good condition.  $10.

Second-class rates and proposed sailings for the American line and Red Star from Philadelphia.  Dated September 28, 1908.  Good condition with some slight creasing.  $15.

SOLD!

20211  International Navigation Company (INC)          Brochure

One of the last brochures ever done for the INC.  Shortly after production of this brochure, INC changed its name to International Mercantile Marine and went on a buying spree, culminating in the purchase of the White Star Line.

32 pages with 16 full-page images, the majority being full color photos.  If these photos are tinted, they are so well done that they resemble the famous full-color photo series taken on the German four stackers during the same time period.

Circa 1901.  The brochure is absolutely stunning and showcases the beautiful interiors of these ships.  American Line and Red Star are represented however the focus is St. Louis, St. Paul, New York, and Philadelphia.  The interior of the brochure is near mint, but the cover has detached and is separating.  The rarest of the rare for the American Line!  $175.

32444  International Navigation Company (INC)          Crystal

International Navigation Company was the parent corporation set up in part by the Pennsylvania railroad to own the American and Red Star lines.  In order to re-flag the City of Paris and the City of New York under the United States flag, INC was mandated by Congress to build two ships of equal size and speed to the Inman ships they purchased resulting in the St. Louis and St. Paul.  Like any merger, there appeared to be a slight confusion over what name would be used going forward.  Inman Line china was used next to American Line china, and International Navigation pieces were also used with both for a short period.  In the end, all these lines were owned by IMM.

A lovely champagne coupe with a beautiful logo featuring the same eagle that would later be used by INC's direct corporate descendant the United States Lines.  The logo and name tell us that this has to be from the 1890's.  Stands 4¾" tall and is in excellent condition.  $235.

American President Line

SOLD!

26035        American President Line           Carafe

As a hallmark of good service that can still be found on some ships today like QE2, when you order a drink like a gin and tonic, they bring you the gin over ice and your tonic in a separate carafe.  It's an extra step to be sure, but a very nice touch.  I suspect this small carafe was for something similar from one of the President's bar service.  Don't see too many items like this for any line.  Great frosted logo.  Stands over 3" tall.  Excellent condition.  $25.

Furness Bermuda

SOLD!

32271   Bermuda                                Brochure

Stunning entry-into-service brochure for Furness Bermuda's triumphant Bermuda.  Dating from 1927, this brochure predates the interiors' completion as every room is shown to us in 21 amazing full-color renderings, one to a page, including a plan of one of the Verandah Suites.  Comes with its original onion-skin herringbone-pattern protective cover (which I removed to scan the cover).  For her time and intended service, she was one of the most luxurious ocean liners in the world, and this brochure is a fitting tribute to her status.  Embossed gold logo on the cover.  Measures 11" x 9½".  In near-mint condition.  $195.

SOLD!

32901    Bermuda                               Deck Plan

First-class tissue deck plan in excellent condition with some slight separation at folds.  Very hard to find anything for the Bermuda as she was in service for less than four years.  This dates from her entry into service as she is listed as "new."  Would frame fantastically.  Opens to 28" x 25".  $150.

32267      Bermuda                           Menu (Maiden Voyage)

I have tried hard not to pepper the site with run-of-the-mill menus.  I usually only put them up if they are compelling, and this one is.  From Bermuda's maiden voyage, this menu is dated January 15, 1928.  Has some foxing to the cover.   How would you like to enjoy a filet mignon or prime rib as the ship plowed its way to Hamilton?  $30.

32877      Bermuda                            Passenger List

From her first year of service, this passenger list is dated December 1, 1928.  Looks like a full list.  The ship is under the command of Captain Jeffries-Davies who was her captain when she burned a few years later.  Has typical passenger information inside, such as the dog kennels, etc.  Embossed Furness Bermuda logo on cover.  Beautiful!  $20.

32145     Bermuda                             Passenger List

This passenger list is dated Valentine's Day (February 14, 1931), and the ship had only four months to live.  Captain Jeffries-Davis in command.  Some slight dirt of the cover.  $20

32831        Bermuda                        Photograph

Stewart Bale had just about one of the best jobs connected with famous ships as anyone I can think of.  How great would complete unfettered access to all the best ships of the 1920's and 1930's be?  He got paid to poke around!  Bale shot this large-format picture of the Bermuda's "Spanish Terrace Cafe."  This room was connected to the smoking room and was famous for its water fountain.  Stamped on the back with Bale's name and address.  Measures about 9" x 11".  Excellent condition.  $40.

32017        Bermuda                      Photograph

The Bermuda on fire, June 17, 1931.  She was having a really bad afternoon.  You can see the flames consuming her lifeboats and bridge!  Photo stamped on the back "Bermuda Photo Service, Queen St., Hamilton."  Very clear and very sad.  Measures about 7½"  x 9½".  $85.

32701       Bermuda                         Stationary

Early piece of stationary and an envelope from her on-board writing room.  Scarce!  $15 for the set.

SOLD!

23353    Monarch of Bermuda           Deck Plan

Color-coded plan dating to 1931, her entry into service.  She is listed as "new."  With 15 photos, the plan is printed on glossy paper, making the images quite clear.  Measures 40" x 33".  Swimming pool is interestingly named the "Caracalla Pool."  Sadly a 7" tear to one of the seams at the bottom, but otherwise in great condition.  Because of the tear this fantastic plan is priced at $75.

32516     Ocean Monarch                    Deck Plan

The Ocean Monarch was Furness's post-war fleet mate for the Queen of Bermuda and replacement for the Monarch of Bermuda.  Opens to over 31" x 18" and dated July, 1963.  Near mint.  $22.

32946       Queen of Bermuda              Spoon, Souvenir

Sterling silver souvenir spoon from her on-board gift shop.  4¾" in length.  This spoon is labeled Q.T.E.V. Queen of Bermuda (Quadruple-Screw Turbo Electric Vessel).  Considering how maneuverable they had to be in the small confines of Hamilton Harbor and long before the invention of bow thrusters, the famous Furness Bermuda liners (Bermuda, Queen of Bermuda, and Monarch of Bermuda) were among the smallest quadruple-screw liners ever built.  It worked too!  These ships were light in draft and comparatively easy to dock.  Excellent condition.  $35.

32723    Furness Bermuda                China, luncheon plate

It seems to be a British ship owner's penchant for serving tea on hand-painted bone china.  All the major lines did it, and Furness Bermuda was no exception.  A shelf of this tea service would be lovely.  This large luncheon plate measures 8" in diameter.  In excellent condition with some utensil marks.  Made by Royal Doulton and back marked Furness Bermuda Line.  $75.

32559    Furness Bermuda                China, bread plate

Hand-painted bread plate in the famous birds and flowers tea service of the Queen of Bermuda.  Measures 5½" in diameter.  Bottom marked with the company name and Royal Doulton.  Excellent condition.  $30.

32004    Furness Bermuda                China, creamer

Made by Royal Doulton and one of those rare occasions where a date mark can tell us what ship the china was used on.  In 1947, the fantastic Monarch of Bermuda was nearing the end of her post-war refit when a fire broke out and she was destroyed.  The Queen of Bermuda's complete post-war overhaul became much more important because she was the sole survivor of this ultra-luxurious pre-war pair.  The impressed date mark of 1948 tells us that this had to have been for the return to service of Queen of Bermuda.

Excellent condition.  Stands 3½" tall.  $30.

32881    Furness Bermuda                China, creamer

Fine-bone china creamer by Royal Doulton from the tea service of the Queen of Bermuda and the Monarch of Bermuda.  Beautiful hand-painted birds and flowers.  Fully marked with the company name on the bottom.  Stands 3" tall.  One wonders why the company needed two slightly different sizes?  Excellent condition.  $35.

SOLD!

32851    Furness Bermuda                China, demi-tasse cup and saucer

Fantastic demi-tasse cup and saucer in the birds and floral pattern.  Hand-painted bone china with the company name on the bottom.  So dainty you can fit the entire thing in the palm of your hand.  This pattern was used on both the Queen of Bermuda and the Monarch of Bermuda.  It was used both in the pre- and post-war period.  Made by Royal Doulton.  Excellent condition.  $65.

32945    Furness Bermuda                China, sugar bowl

Fine-bone china sugar bowl from the on-board tea service.  Measures 3" in diameter and stands 2" tall.  Marked with the company name on the bottom.  Excellent condition.  $30.

SOLD!

32098    Furness Bermuda                China, tea cup and saucer

Hard-to-find fine-bone china tea cup and saucer.  Made by Royal Doulton and back marked Furness Bermuda Line.  Grab it while you can because cups and saucers go fast!  In excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or crazing.  $55.

SOLD!

32519    Furness Bermuda                China, tea pot

Very rare china individual tea pot.  Made by Royal Doulton and back marked Furness Bermuda Line.  Hand painted in the famous birds and flowers pattern.  Stands 4¼" tall and measures 5½" from handle to spout.  Just big enough to serve two cups of tea from.  I tried filling the tea cup with water from the tea pot to test its capacity.  Mint condition.  $135.

32006    Furness Bermuda                Glass, Champagne Coupe

Let's raise a toast to the Queen.... of Bermuda!  In the pre-war period, Bermuda was a classy destination for wealthy folks, many staying for months at a time in hotels ashore owned by Furness Bermuda.  Conversely in the post-war period, Bermuda became more of a quick get-away for middle class folks and honeymoon couples.  The frosted logo tells us this glass dates to the post-war period.  Perhaps it was used for many honeymoon toasts?  Stands 4½" tall and is in perfect condition.  No chips or flea bites.  $35.

32689    Furness Bermuda                Glass, Wine

Does anyone know when Furness Bermuda changed their logo?  This is certainly a frosted pre-war logo.  Stands 4" tall.  Excellent condition.  $45.

32556      Furness Bermuda                Napkin

Fantastic Belgian linen napkin measuring about 19" x 19".  In great condition with a super pre-war logo that measures 6" across, surrounded by a pattern of oak leaves and acorns.  4 available @ $20 ea.

32812       Furness Bermuda           Silver

Beautiful set of silver salt and pepper shakers made by Mappin and Webb.  Emblazoned with the pre-war Furness Bermuda logo, they stand 3½" tall.  In excellent condition. $75.

One last question to end this page with.  Does anyone out there know how to date Mappin & Webb silver plate?  So far I am not able to come up with a dating system.  It would be nice to hear if anyone knows.  Please write!
